SOMG expanded this effort in September with a $4.8 million commitment to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/health.gov\/our-work\/nutrition-physical-activity\/white-house-conference-hunger-nutrition-and-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health<\/a>\u00a0that includes assisting other medical schools in implementing the open-source\u202flifestyle medicine curriculum.<\/p>\n<p>Lifestyle medicine is a medical specialty that uses therapeutic\u202flifestyle\u202finterventions as a primary modality to treat chronic conditions\u202fincluding,\u202fbut not limited to,\u202fcardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, and obesity.\u202f Lifestyle medicine certified clinicians are trained to apply\u202fevidence-based,\u202fwhole-person, prescriptive lifestyle change to treat and, when used intensively, often reverse such conditions. Applying the six pillars of lifestyle medicine\u2014a whole-food, plant-predominant eating pattern, physical activity, restorative sleep, stress management, avoidance of risky substances and positive social connections\u2014also provides effective prevention for these conditions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Today 60 percent or more U.S. adults\u2014and an alarmingly rising number of children\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rand.org\/content\/dam\/rand\/pubs\/tools\/TL200\/TL221\/RAND_TL221.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">have already been diagnosed<\/a>\u00a0with one chronic disease, and an estimated 40 percent have two or more.\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Some 75 to 90 percent of chronic disease<a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.1071055\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0has been shown<\/a>\u00a0to be preventable by lifestyle modification, particularly through dietary change.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, medical students receive little or no education in lifestyle behaviors such as nutrition and physical activity. A 2019 systematic review published in The Lancet concluded\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanplh\/article\/PIIS2542-5196(19)30171-8\/fulltext#seccestitle10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">that nutrition is insufficiently incorporated into medical education,<\/a>\u00a0regardless of country, setting, or year of medical education. These deficits affect students\u2019 knowledge, skills, and confidence to implement nutrition care into patient care.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cBy sharing and helping to implement its innovative, evidence-based lifestyle medicine curriculum with other medical schools, the USC School of Medicine Greenville is leading the way in ensuring that future generations of physicians leave medical school with a foundation of knowledge they need to use lifestyle medicine to prevent, treat and reverse noncommunicable chronic diseases,\u201d said ACLM Past President Cate Collings, MD, MS, FACC, DipABLM. \u201cI encourage all medical schools to take advantage of this unique, free opportunity to help fill the gaping void of adequate lifestyle medicine training and prepare students to be leaders in our rapidly changing health care system.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>LMEd evolved from the Lifestyle Medicine Education Collaborative founded by Eddie Phillips, MD, FACSM, and Jennifer Trilk, PhD, FACSM, DipACLM, in 2013 and co-directed with Dennis Muscato, MS.
