AI\/AN medical students were the only racial group that did not experience an absolute increase in medical school enrollment.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2023\/11\/01\/us-infant-mortality-rate-rises-first-time-two-decades\">This article<\/a> outlines a CDC report showing the U.S. infant mortality rate rose 3% in 2022. There were 610 more infant deaths in 2022 over 2021, with increases among all ethnicity groups except for infants born to Asian women. Deaths among infants of Black women remained the highest of all ethnicity groups, and the mortality rate for infants of Native American or Alaskan Native women also increased significantly. This is the first year-over-year increase since 2001-2002.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Health Systems<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Becker&#8217;s Hospital Review<\/em> asked C-suite executives from hospitals and health systems across the U.S. to share their organization&#8217;s areas of growth for the next few years. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beckershospitalreview.com\/hospital-management-administration\/health-system-executive-roles-are-evolving-68-leaders-share-2024-changes.html\">Here are<\/a> their responses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Military Health<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>U.S. Army Fort Jackson in Louisiana <a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/article\/271366\/grab_and_go_healthy_meals_for_on_the_go_soldiers\">has opened<\/a> Victory Fresh at the U.S. Army Drill Sergeant Academy. ACLM\u2019s LM23 speakers Walter Willett, Frank Hu, et. al., published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0002916523661192\">i<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0002916523661192\">n this<\/a> <em>American Journal of Clinical Nutrition<\/em> article, supports current dietary recommendations for limiting consumption of red meat intake and emphasizes the importance of different alternative sources of protein for T2D prevention.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healio.com\/news\/cardiology\/20231019\/with-little-evidence-cgm-benefits-for-people-without-diabetes-largely-hypothetical?utm_source=selligent&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=news\">Emerging data<\/a> show an increased use of continuing glucose monitors among people with prediabetes, especially those with an HbA1c of 6% or higher, and those with gestational diabetes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Cancer<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine <a href=\"https:\/\/southfloridahospitalnews.com\/sylvester-awarded-4m-nci-grant-to-study-whether-lifestyle-interventions-can-benefit-patients-with-advanced-breast-cancer\/\">has received<\/a> a $4-million, five-year grant from the National Cancer Institute to study whether lifestyle interventions such as exercise and intermittent fasting in patients with advanced breast cancer help them better tolerate treatment side effects.<\/li>\n<li>A randomized trial of an exercise and nutrition intervention on chemotherapy relative dose intensity and pathologic complete response in women diagnosed with breast cancer <a href=\"https:\/\/ascopubs.org\/doi\/full\/10.1200\/JCO.23.00871?cookieSet=1\">was reported<\/a> in the <em>Journal of Clinical Oncology<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Cardiovascular Disease<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>The Portfolio Diet Score was associated with a lower risk of CVD, including CHD and stroke, and a more favorable blood lipid and inflammatory profile, in three large prospective cohorts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1161\/CIRCULATIONAHA.123.065551\">in a study<\/a> published in <em>Circulation<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Overweight and Obesity<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Weight loss companies Weight Watchers and Noom both now offer access to anti-obesity medications in a shift from their dieting approaches, and Noom recently <a href=\"https:\/\/medcitynews.com\/2023\/10\/obesity-glp1-employers-app-noom\/#:~:text=Noom%20is%20now%20offering%20Noom%20Med%20to%20employers.,comment%20%2F%20Oct%2012%2C%202023%20at%202%3A52%20PM\">announced<\/a> that it is expanding its Noom Med service to its employer benefits program.<\/li>\n<li>Some researchers publishing in <em>BMJ<\/em> are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/383\/BMJ-2023-075736\">expressing optimism<\/a> about an apparent plateau in prevalence of unhealthy weight among children in some high-income countries, particularly among young children.<\/li>\n<li>A <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2810826?utm_source=For_The_Media&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=ftm_links&amp;utm_term=101823\">new study<\/a> extended the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/04\/27\/health\/best-diets-heart-aha-wellness\/index.html\">benefits of diet and exercise<\/a> from mere weight loss to the loss of harmful, visceral fat in older people.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>CKD<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Data presented at the American Society of Nephrology Kidney Week 2023 conference showed nearly all patients <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hcplive.com\/view\/lifestyle-changes-difficult-but-beneficial-for-patients-with-ckd-study-finds\">in a recent study<\/a> reported difficulty implementing lifestyle changes recommended by their physician, but successful implementation led to improvements across several dimensions of physical health, mental health, and overall quality of burden of brain and mental health-related disorders has prompted the need for a \u201cbrain science-inspired industrial strategy\u201d that will build America\u2019s brain capital. A full explanation of this strategy and a road map of how to achieve it were unveiled at the recent United Nations General Assembly Science Summit and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bakerinstitute.org\/research\/enhancing-brain-power-enriching-economies-potential-american-brain-capital-industry\">reported<\/a> on by Rice University.<\/li>\n<li>This\u00a0<em>Vital Signs<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vitalsigns\/health-worker-mental-health\/index.html\">report<\/a> contains an analysis from the CDC Quality of Worklife survey focused on well-being and working conditions, comparing data from 2018 to 2022.
